On November 16th, SAMHSA announced that they were funding a three-year program for programs that help people in the criminal justice system to find help for mental health and addiction disorders.
Understanding the Grant Opportunity
There are 41 opportunities to participate and gain funding. Each program will receive up to $325,000 per year toward their efforts. The goal is to help individuals suffering from addiction to get help and treatment while addressing the critical intersection between substance use disorders and criminal justice involvement.
The Connection Between Addiction and Incarceration
Research consistently shows that a significant percentage of individuals in the criminal justice system struggle with substance use disorders. Without proper treatment and support, this creates a cycle where untreated addiction leads to repeated criminal behavior and reincarceration. This grant program recognizes that breaking this cycle requires comprehensive, evidence-based treatment approaches that address both the addiction and the underlying factors contributing to criminal justice involvement.
Who Can Benefit from This Funding
These grants are designed to support organizations that can provide integrated services, including screening and assessment, treatment planning, case management, and ongoing recovery support. Programs that coordinate care between criminal justice agencies, treatment providers, and community organizations are particularly well-positioned to utilize these funds effectively.
The Broader Impact on Communities
When individuals receive appropriate addiction treatment instead of, or in addition to, incarceration, communities benefit in multiple ways. Treatment reduces recidivism rates, decreases the burden on overcrowded jails and prisons, and helps individuals rebuild their lives as productive members of society. This approach is both more humane and more cost-effective than incarceration alone.
Addiction treatment is so vital to our society and Alleva is dedicated to the cause of making treatment available to all.
